I am Shiwei Hong (Sewell Hong), a PhD student in Computer Science at George Mason University, advised by Prof. Zhicong Lu.
My research examines how artificial intelligence interprets and participates in social life. I study pragmatic language understanding, human–AI co-creation, livestreaming, and online communities, drawing on approaches from human–computer interaction and natural language processing. My methods include system building, computational analysis, controlled experiments, and qualitative research.

Oral presentation at EMNLP 2026 Main Conference
Our paper, You Really Didn't Get That? Benchmarking Social Pragmatic Inference for Indirect and Playful Chinese Online Comments, was selected for an oral presentation at EMNLP 2026 in Budapest (Discourse & Pragmatics). The main conference acceptance rate was about 15.4%, and oral presentations accounted for approximately 2.7% of all submissions.
